What is Medi-Cal?
Medi-Cal is the official nickname of the California Medical Assistance Program, California's Medicaid program. Medi-Cal provides health and dental coverage for qualified individuals and families in California.
California state dental health coverage used to be called Denti-Cal, and you may still hear people say Denti-Cal. It doesn't really matter what it's called, the fact that Californians who are eligible for Medi-Cal receive comprehensive dental coverage is a great thing for teeth!
Who is eligible for Medi-Cal Dental?
Medi-Cal and Medi-Cal dental provide coverage for qualified residents of California, including families, seniors, persons with disabilities, children in foster care, pregnant women, and childless adults living in California with limited income and resources.
What does Medi-Cal Dental Cover?
Medi-Cal Dental covers all medically-necessary dental care.
Medi-Cal Coverage:
- Oral Evaluation (Under age 3)
- Exams and x-rays
- Prophylaxis
- Fluoride
- Filings, including amalgams & composites
- Crowns, including pre-fabricated and laboratory processed
- Scaling and Root Planing*
- Periodontal (gum) Maintenance
- Root Canals
- Partial and Full Dentures
- Tooth extractions
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Other medically-necessary services
- Emergency Dental Services
Is there an annual limit to Medi-Cal dental coverage?
There is no yearly limit for children’s covered dental services or for adults who live in a nursing facility.
For adults 21 years of age or older, some services are limited to $1,800 per person for each calendar year. However, there is no limit on medically-necessary procedures.
